Famine Declared in Sudan
Famine Declared in Sudan
The humanitarian situation in Chad is critical, with a third of the population in need of aid. This includes 722,100 Sudanese refugees who fled to Eastern Chad and 255,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in the Lake Province area. Hunger persists at high levels, with over 3.6 million people facing food insecurity, and more than 1.7 million children under five are malnourished.
We respond to the needs of the most vulnerable communities by implementing emergency, resilience, and development programs. Our health and nutrition initiatives strengthen the healthcare system by improving the quality of care, training staff, and managing cases of severe acute malnutrition and pediatric and obstetric emergencies. Last year, we built five maternity units.
In community health centers and refugee camps, we provide access to clean drinking water and safe sanitation and promote good hygiene practices. We also support communities through food aid, livelihoods strengthening, agricultural development, and support for pastoralism. A priority for last year was supporting IDPs in the Lake region and flood victims in eastern Chad with essential goods and providing water and sanitation support.
