The State of Hunger in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is grappling with a deepening humanitarian crisis driven by repeated natural disasters and high rates of food insecurity. In 2024, natural disasters left 19.7 million people food-insecure, with 41% of the population lacking access to clean water and 61% lacking adequate sanitation. Malnutrition rates continued to escalate, with 11% of the population experiencing severe malnutrition that requires urgent treatment.

How We're Helping in Bangladesh

Since 2007, Action Against Hunger has been actively addressing the multifaceted humanitarian challenges in Bangladesh, including climate disasters, food insecurity, malnutrition, and the influx of one million Rohingya refugees. We partner with local organizations to implement innovative projects focused on climate-adaptive technologies, climate resilience, sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, youth entrepreneurship, and gender-sensitive livelihoods support.

Action Against Hunger teams in Bangladesh assist the government with cyclone preparedness, using artificial intelligence to model and mitigate these events. We also treat thousands of children suffering from severe and moderate malnutrition and provide psychosocial support to individuals in need.

We work in Rohingya displacement settlements to prevent and treat malnutrition among young children.

Rohingya Crisis: Challenges in Cox’s Bazar Continue

Our teams improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene for Rohingya refugees and community members in and outside of displacement camps.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

We train mothers how to screen their children for malnutrition using a color-coded band called the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) band.

A Band of Hope

Our teams partner with communities vulnerable to climate disasters to help them earn income, adapt, and build resilience to future shocks.
