Famine Declared in Sudan
Almost 800,000 people in refugee-hosting districts are experiencing crisis levels of food insecurity. Refugees are highly impacted, with an estimated 54,000 children under five and 9,800 pregnant or lactating women suffering from acute malnutrition. The situation is expected to worsen, with the number of people in need of urgent action projected to rise. The main drivers of food insecurity in Uganda are prolonged dry spells, rising food prices, low purchasing power, crop and livestock pests and diseases, and conflicts between host communities and refugees.
Action Against Hunger works in 16 districts and 12 refugee settlements across Uganda, providing health and nutrition services, including primary healthcare to hundreds of thousands of children, pregnant and lactating women, and adults. Our nutrition activities reach over 600,000 people.
We improve food security by supporting farmers and implementing irrigation systems. Our water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs have increased access to water for over 50,000 people. We also conduct advocacy meetings and evidence-based research to advance budgeting for nutrition and WASH services and help establish coordination committees to enhance multisectoral nutrition efforts.
